I didn't know what a carabiner looked like until a friend gave us carabiner keychains from his recent trip to the US. It is a metal loop with a gate usually attached to a spring for locking mechanism. It is normally used in safety-critical systems like climbing, trekking, securing harness and on rescue missions. Carabiners are high-grade metals and imitation ones are used as novelty items like keychains and these novelty products normally have prints indicating that they are not designed for weight-bearing use.
