Personal and Atmospheric Uses for Essential Oils

Essential oils, or oils that are derived from plants and condensed into useful, strongly scented products, have a variety of uses that range from homeopathic health solutions to creating a specific mood factor in homes or other spaces. Regardless of an individual's experience with essential oils, finding a unique way to use them is often welcome.

Putting Popular Essential Oils to Work

Lavender oil typically has a calming or relaxing effect on both humans and animals. If a household member is struggling with insomnia, placing a couple of drops of a lavender oil on his or her pillow may not only bring restful sleep, but also leave that person feeling particularly relaxed the following day. Lavender oil can also be used to calm overexcited dogs, lengthen and thicken eyelashes and facilitate healing for skin that is chapped and dry.

Thieves oil has been tested by universities and proven to be a useful cleanser; not only does this type of essential oil kill bacteria and therefore reduce the odds of family members becoming ill during cold and flu season, it can also improve and maybe even remove bad odors. For example, putting a couple of drops of thieves oil into a teenage boy's sneakers may keep the sweaty smell of a locker to a minimum.

While peppermint has been long-considered to be an excellent appetite suppressant, the essential oil version of the herb also may aid in digestion, be supportive of the body's respiratory system and enhance the flavor of bottled water. Those looking for psychological benefits to peppermint essential oil may also notice an increased ability to concentrate on the task at hand.

Lemon is another common essential oil that offers users a host of benefits, including support for the nervous system and the promotion of proper digestion and skin health. Interestingly, lemon essential oils are also largely comprised of the incredibly powerful antioxidant, d-limonene. Using this essential oil in homes, offices and churches is popular because lemon also seems to have a positive, uplifting effect on a person's mind.

Integrating Essential Oils into Daily Life

Buying essential oil singles is often a good idea for those who trying any particular version for the first time. Although bottles of essential oils are typically inexpensive, it is beneficial to narrow down one's preferences before making a purchase that will last for quite some time.
