Why does my toilet bubble when I run the washer?

It's not a disaster or even a serious problem really, but having your toilet bubble when you do the wash can be a curious thing. Calling a professional like the Plumbing Detectives, an experienced Sydney plumber service, may not be necessary. Find out why.

What Causes the Gurgling?

First of all, you need to understand what is going on in your plumbing. Behind the scenes, there are various levels of water and air in your pipes at all times. The whole system is under some amount of pressure as well, which changes through the day as taps are opened and the toilet is flushed. Vents are part of the system to allow air to move in and out, keeping the pressure balanced and everything running as it should.

When that pressure level is out of balance, your plumbing system can develop vacuums or pressure build-ups in unexpected places. In this particular case, that means the toilet. Air movement in the toilet drain causes the bubbling. If the air movement is strong enough, it can actually suck the water out of the toilet bowl, removing the "cap" that holds in the sewage gases that accumulate in the toilet drain. At this point, you have a more serious problem than just a few gurgles.

So this is the main root of the problem: unequal pressure in the pipes. There are two possible sources for this.

Vents

How your plumbing system is vented can be the source of your problem, though a potential blockage could be creating a temporary problem. When the toilet and the lines serving your washing machine are using the same vent, the sudden rush of water that comes with a washing machine draining will create a sizable vacuum in the system, which leads to the bubbles in the toilet. Common venting routes are not unusual even if they are not the best way to plan out your plumbing. You might want to talk to a plumber about adding extra vents or changing the pipe routes.

Drains

The other half of the system that can cause the gurgling is the drains. This is where a blockage is more likely going to be the root cause, especially if the system was running bubble-free before. Examine the drains and make sure they are clear before doing anything else. If that doesn't fix your gurgling, then there is a more fundamental problem with the pipe routes again. Sharing drains will cause pressure disruptions during the wash drain cycle that appear in your toilet bowl.

Urgency

A little bubbling now and then isn't going to be a disaster and shouldn't be a cause for alarm. It's not a great situation but you should keep an eye on it. As mentioned earlier, drastic pressure changes when the washing machine drains can be enough to pull all the water out of the bowl. This is a more serious concern. That water is there for a reason, to create a fluid and flexible lid on an otherwise open pipe. Gases from inside the drain are hazardous and should not be allowed to go venting into your bathroom. If this starts to be a regular occurrence, call the plumber.

Take Care of Exterior Maintenance and Repairs

Your home's exterior is the first thing guests and neighbors see when they come to visit, so it should make a good impression. By keeping up with exterior maintenance and repairs on a regular basis, you can increase your home's curb appeal and property value and create an inviting entrance to your home.

Exterior Maintenance and Repairs

Exterior maintenance and repairs will keep your home looking its best year-round. Each year, your home's exterior is exposed to hot sun, rain storms, winds, and occasional snow, sleet and ice, so it's important to inspect your home's exterior components on a regular basis. Regular maintenance and attention to needed repairs can prevent problems and save you thousands of dollars every year on costly repairs. If you need help finding a qualified contractor for repairs, get referrals from friends and neighbors and check contractor leads in your area.

Roofing

Your roof protects the structural integrity of your home, so it's essential to make sure it's in good condition. Regular roof inspections and maintenance are essential to prevent leaks that can cause interior damage, as well as mold and mildew growth on shingles and in gutters. You should inspect your roof once in the spring and once in the fall to look for loose, curling, broken, or missing shingles. If you have a fireplace, inspect your chimney and flue at the same time to prevent smoke and fires.

Gutters

It's important to inspect and clean out your gutters and downspouts once or twice every year, preferably in the spring and fall. Gutters with broken or loose joints, or gutters that are stopped up with debris like mud, leaves and twigs can cause damage to your home's facings, siding and exterior paint. They can also cause leaks that can damage your home's attic, interior walls and foundation.

Paint and Siding

Exterior paint and siding is exposed to hot sun, rain and wind all year. Heat and sun beating down on your house can cause your siding and paint to fade, crack, splinter and blister. Rain can expose siding and paint to mold and mildew, especially if dampness doesn't dry out quickly. Both sun and rain can cause wood and vinyl siding to expand and contract which can result in increased damage from breaking and cracking.

Doors and Windows

Exterior doors and windows should be inspected and maintained on a regular basis throughout the year. Since both are exposed to outdoor elements year-round, they can be easily damaged. You should inspect your doors and windows for cracks and broken glass that cause air leaks and heat and cooling loss. For maximum energy efficiency, weatherproof your doors and windows to keep your home's interior temperatures comfortable year-round.

Beni Ourain Rugs-Minimalist and Magnificent

Beni Ourain and Berber rugs are some of the most unique in the world. They are handmade from Berbers and Moroccans in the Beni Ourain tribe from mountainous regions of North Africa. These rugs are made with wool from sheep that are found in the Atlas Mountains of this area of the world. Because these rugs are made from materials that are completely organic, these rugs do not pose a problem for people who may suffer from allergies to volatile organic compounds, and with their natural dyes they are generally much better for the environment than other carpets made from synthetic materials.

These rugs also have a signature look. They frequently feature minimalist patterns and tribal designs, or a combination of the two. The simple color schemes with neutral tones like ivory make Beni Ourain and Berber rugs ideal for any number of color schemes in your home or apartment. The designs of a Moroccan Beni Ourain rug also make one of these items a great addition to any home no matter the aesthetic, whether rustic or modern.

Beni rugs have several uses, as well. As they are made from natural wool, they are very comfortable to sit on and can function as decorative throw items on recliners and sofas. As hanging items, they can add an exotic touch to a room’s overall décor. In the winter, a Moroccan Beni Ourain rug can also provide added warmth and insulation to a room if hung on the wall.

Beni Ourain and Berber rugs have a long history in the rural parts of North Africa. These rugs can be woven to accommodate the diverse climate of Morocco. They can be woven very thick, for instance, to provide warmth in the snowy mountainous regions, or can be woven more lightly, which is more appropriate for the hotter, more arid desert regions. The tribal people from whom these rugs originate historically have used them as coverings for saddles to make riding long distances more comfortable, to cover bodies during burial, and as festive clothing. They also have a history of sleeping on them. These items were placed on beds for greater warmth and comfort.

Beni rugs first became popular among Western designers in the middle of the twentieth century due to their minimalist looks, which paired beautifully with modern furniture. At the present time Beni rugs have seen a resurgence in popularity, as they are authentic handmade items that offer a one-of-a-kind look that can make any room in the home more interesting. In addition to being functional and good for the environment due to their non-toxic materials, they can bring real personality to a bland room or a run-of-the-mill piece of furniture.

How to Get Rid of Pests with Natural Solutions

For people concerned about the toxins and chemicals used by professional exterminators, you might be interested in trying a few natural DIY options the next time you find yourself with an insect infestation at home. Just remember that many natural solutions are less potent than commercial pesticides, and even if they do the job, it can take longer for them to take care of the problem.

You can try these homemade ideas, or talk to professionals like Burnaby exterminator Local Pest Control. They usually have milder or non-toxic options at their disposal too.

Do a Clean Up
Many insects are drawn to food sources, such as open food packages or even just too many crumbs on the counter or floor. Though this is the best preventative step you can take, it should also be done even after the pests have arrived.

Not only should all food be packed away securely, dust up all crumbs and then give counters and floors a good washing to eliminate the smell of food. You also want to get rid of any scent trails that bugs like ants lay down to help others to follow. A scented product will help even more, rather than an unscented cleanser for this.

Diatomaceous Earth
This is a favorite for eco-friendly people looking for natural ways to kill insects. Diatomaceous earth a fine powder that is made up (on a microscopic level) of crushed shells. It feels like flour to us but it's like shards of glass to tiny bugs. The fragments get into their joints and quickly damage their exoskeletons. Without any further detail, it kills insects as they walk through it. Sprinkle a generous amount along the edges of baseboards, under cabinets or anywhere else you see the pests. It's harmless to anything larger than a bug, so don't worry about pets or kids either. As long as the DE stays dry, it will quickly start to kill off any insects that cross its path.

Borax and Sugar
This is another recipe for a natural bug-killer that uses easy-to-find ingredients. It works very well for ants and roaches specifically. You need 1/2 cup white sugar, about 1 1/2 tablespoons of borax (check the laundry section at the supermarket) and 1 1/2 cups of warm water. Just mix everything together and stir until the powders dissolve. Now you have your repellent.

Place very shallow saucers or even jar lids in places where the bugs are a problem, along with a cotton ball or two. Add enough of your solution to soak the cotton. The bugs will be attracted to the sweet sugar but will be killed off by the borax. They often take small droplets back to the colony, so they will start to die off even if they don't visit the traps directly.

Scented Repellents
Other options include a wide range of heavily-scented material that will repel insects. Sprinkling cinnamon, mint leaves, garlic powder, or coffee grounds around where the insects are congregating can be enough. Moth balls are a stronger material for this, but they aren't really very natural and might be better saved as a last resort.

If you are unable to handle your insect problem with these natural methods, you should accept defeat and try the exterminator. Letting the problem continue for too long will create a much bigger infestation to deal with.

Is Your Home Feeling Boring? Small Things You Can Do to Improve Alone Time

Even if you absolutely love your home and think it’s the best place on earth, it is possible to feel like you’re getting bored with it from time to time. This is especially true if you work from home or spend a great deal of time in your house throughout the week. After all, if you’re only there at night and on weekends, how could you get bored with the only relaxing environment in your life?

While you might think you need to replace major pieces of furniture, pull up the carpet or get the inside of the house painted, the fact is that you probably don’t need to do any of that to feel like you enjoy your space a bit more. In many cases, doing small things is all that really needs to happen.

Keep reading to learn more about the small ways that you can improve the look and feel of your home. Many of them will cost you less than $100, and some you can probably do without spending a penny at all!

Improve Lighting

One of the biggest problem the average person has in their home is lighting. Whether yours is too bright – which usually isn’t the problem – or it’s too dark, lighting plays a major role in how your home feels.

Make sure you’re using overhead lighting properly, but include multi-functional lighting pieces like floor and table lamps as well. Use spots and floor lights to point out interesting architectural features.

Doing this will make your home so much more appealing, even to you.

What Does Your Home Smell Like?

(Photo not mine)

Believe it or not, the way your home smells could really be impacting how you feel about being there. Take some time to improve the smell of your home.

The best way to improve the smell of your home long-term is by using essential oils like patchouli essential oils. Placing these in a small container will do much more than lighting incense and candles, and you won’t have to replace them nearly as often.

Hire Help

Deep cleaning your home by yourself is very difficult. Sometimes hiring a cleaning service to come just once a month for the big stuff is all you need though.

Many services will do this for very little, and it might add up to only about $20 per week. That’s an expense that might be worth it for a much nicer home.

Smooth Sliding Drawers

Every home has drawers installed in their cabinets but not all drawers are the same. There are drawers that are hard to pull while others just glide easily.

For my personal preference, I like the drawers installed at home to have a smooth gliding action as if they have hydraulics. I like those drawer sliders to be noiseless and have locking mechanism so they don't accidentally fall on your toes.

Drawer slides can be found in many hardware or home depot stores and they are also available online like the drawer slides from ovis as pictured below:

You can buy many kinds of drawer slides like undermount slides, locking, partial extension, soft close drawer slides, among others.

Things to Do Before Moving Into a New Home

Moving into a new house can be incredibly exciting but too often this excitement quickly abates as your realise how much you have to do before the actual move. Above all, it is important to be organised before moving into a new home and to get started on all that needs to be done well in advance of your moving date.

1: Consider your storage options

There is no better time to get rid of everything you really don’t need and the things that you no longer use than before your move into a new home. There really is little point in taking it all with you and cluttering up your new home.

Rather than moving all of your items with you and trying to locate them all in your new home, move some things into storage. Modern storage facilities, such as those provided by Fort Knox, are safe, secure, clean and hygienic; you can feel entirely confident that your goods are stored in an optimal environment at one of these facilities. Professional storage facilities also allow ready access to storage units for their customers and are usually open at times convenient to most people.

2: Book a removalist

Well in advance of your moving date (perhaps even 4-6 weeks), it’s useful to book your removalist. Do this as early as possible as removalist companies do get booked up and popular times for moving, such as weekends, can result in hot demand for removalist services.

It is wise to obtain quotes from a number of removalist companies and pay attention to what is, and what is not, included in their quotes. If there will be multiple stops for the removalist, including moving some goods into storage, discuss these upfront.

3: Get rid of items that you no longer need

While many of us hold on to items out of sentimentality or fear that we will one day need them, the time before you move to a new home is ideal for getting rid of items for which you no longer have a use. As much as possible, recycle and donate items. While you may be finished with them, remember that friends, family members and charities may be incredibly grateful and appreciative of your pre-loved goods.

Get rid of items before you move. You don’t want to pay to move things that are no longer needed and nor do you want to deal with the frustration of having to sort through and work out what to do with them as you settle into your new home.

4: Measure the spaces in your new home

Before moving, it’s a very good idea to know precisely how much room you have and whether your furniture will fit. You should also look carefully at the storage area available as this will help you appreciate how much you can take and how much should be disposed of.

5: Change your address

In advance of your move, contact all of the relevant authorities and organisations to advise them of your change of address. It’s well worth paying a very reasonable fee for your mail to be re-directed in case you receive post from places you had not thought to contact.

In the time before you move to a new home, it is vital to be organised and well prepared. Ensure that you move only items that you really need and have a complete awareness of the space that is available.

5 Must-Haves For Your Kids’ Bedroom

When designing your kids’ bedroom it’s important to work with your child to create a room they love. Try to include elements that they won’t outgrow too quickly. A cutesy design may work for the moment but may need to be redone quite quickly.

Quality Bedding

The biggest role of the bedroom is to provide a place for your child to sleep. Sleep is very important to your child’s health and general wellbeing. Buy bedding with natural fibres. Wool is a wonderful bedding material because of its insulation properties. It literally keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. Children do not have the same ability as adults to adjust to temperature changes so wool is ideal for helping keep them at a comfortable temperature. Give your children the benefit of a good night’s sleep; click here to check out what specialty retailers like MiniJumbuk have available in woollen bedding.

A Place to Read

Cultivating a love of reading in your child will be of tremendous benefit to them. It will help them with their education and foster their creativity and imagination. Try creating a special space in their bedroom for reading. A reading nook is ideal. Make it cosy and comfortable; add a few great books, some beanbags or comfy scatter cushions. Sit and read with your child and pretty soon they will be using the nook independently.

Make the Walls Fun

Get creative with the walls in your kids’ room. Go all out to make this space colourful. Get your child to create some designs with pencil and pad and then implement them on the walls. Try stripes, spots or handprints. You can also buy blackboard paint and make one wall a blackboard where your child can get creative each day.

Name It!

Personalise your child’s room by adding their name to the décor. Start with a sign on their bedroom door featuring their name. You can paint their initials on the wall or perhaps create an embroidered wall hanging using their name.

Storage

Help your child create order in their bedroom by providing adequate storage for their things. Try to make sure that there is a place for everything. Encourage your young one to put things where they belong after they have finished using them. If they have Lego make sure they have a plastic bin or cane basket to store it. That way they can quickly and easily put it away. Having a place for things will keep your child’s room clutter-free and calm.

A Homemade Quilt

Another way to really personalise your child’s room is to create a homemade quilt. This might be the work of a crafty grandmother or perhaps something you and your child work on together. Making a patchwork quilt from odds and ends of material can be great fun and is easy sewing. Another idea is to try fabric pens and paints so your child can draw their own design on a plain doona cover.

Include some of these exciting elements in your child’s room and you will create a space where they can feel right at home. Involve them as much as possible in the design and creation of their bedroom décor and you will be on a winner.

Oh Christmas Tree: Define Your Holiday Decorating Style

You want onlookers to say, “Oh, that’s your tree!” rather than “Ew, that’s your tree?” this holiday season.  It takes little effort to lift a finger and place ornaments on a tree, yet it takes a lot of passion to transform a barren evergreen into something extra special.

Whether you live alone in an apartment or a member of larger immediate family, you can use the following ideas to style your tree like no other on the block this holiday season.

Grandma’s Garland

Ask elderly relatives and best friends for their hand-me-down ornaments and sentimental pieces that they’ve kept and stowed away through the years.  December is a time to be with family and friends who cannot always close the distance in time for Christmas.  Therefore, place others’ tokens on your tree, so they’re there in spirit if not in presence.  Grandma’s garland, Aunt Rose’s twinkling lights, and your best friend’s star to go on top makes your tree truly unique.

The Kid’s Crafts

It’s likely that teachers and after school aides will devise activities so children can make their own ornaments.  But, the seasonal pastime translates well into the home, giving you added ornaments to place on the tree.  Let the kids contribute too, serving as artists or ‘consultants,’ helping you choose ornaments from the store and online sites offering personalized Christmas tree ornaments.

Your Favorite Season

Christmas is a great season for celebrating but maybe it is not your favorite.  So, use symbols and colors from other seasons to dress your Christmas tree.  Use bats from Halloween, bunnies from Easter, and hats and horns from New Year’s Eve, and bright and sunny summer colors to style your tree as you wish.

Annual Ornaments

Purchase new ornaments each year and accumulate a sleigh full of trinkets.  It’s cheaper than springing for a whole new set of decorations and ornaments each year.  The trick is in the storage; be sure to pack with care and place boxes somewhere dry place where they won’t be damaged or heavy things placed on top.  If you have enough room in storage, don’t even bother undressing the tree; just throw a large protective tarp over top.

Homemade Dressing

Take a lesson from the kids and make your own tree dressings rather than spend money on expensive store-offered items.  Tear old sheets in strips to wrap around the branches and use glue and colored glitter to dress the outside of aluminum cans, sticking them on the end of limbs.

Pop Theme

Adopt a theme from popular culture and associate your tree with the Kardashians, a political party, or your city’s major league baseball team.  Like adding styles of other seasons to the tree, take advantage of ornaments other than those colored red and green and shaped like Santas and reindeers.  Celebrate the season with an obscure or surprise theme your family and onlookers will truly appreciate.

Outside Aid

It’s cold outside during the winter season.  Invite family and neighborhood friends inside for warm cocoa and some Christmas music.  Host a decorating party.  Invite people over for food and drinks with one catch; they must have their contributory ornament in hand.  The holidays are about togetherness, and to ensure you deck the halls with good people, send them an official invite.

Holiday Hedgerow

What’s better than one colossal Christmas tree?  It’s a number of well-dressed Christmas plants.  Why settle with one tree when you can host seasonal foliage throughout the house.  Impress onlookers with widespread holiday cheer and fresh air of seasonal cheer.  Head to your nearest plant nursery and inquire about indoor plants with limbs strong enough to withhold dressing and ornaments.

Larger Presence

You may want to deemphasize the size of the tree due to limited space, so compensate by wrapping large-sized boxes in colorful Christmas paper.  The federal holiday, taking place on a Thursday and giving workers a day off, is present enough, but present visitors with an eye-full of festive boxes.  Visit your local mail office and purchase oversized cardboard boxes to arrange around the tree and home.

Facts To Remember On Vinyl Wall Art And Wall Art Stickers

Guys have anyone of you came across the concept of vinyl wall art or what is also commonly known as wall art stickers? Vinyl wall art stickers and decals are a great way to spice up your magic wall without working very hard and going through a lot of hassle.

Vinyl wall art and wall art stickers are the best way to decorate your house at a reasonable price

I personally have a lot of wall art stickers in my house and among them, I love beautiful living room wall quotes most. I also have some lovely nursery wall stickers for my nursery, and my son love animals series the most. He is very happy to invite some cute animal friends to his own space. I am very impressed by the way these simple yet bright and colorful wall art decals could change the whole look of your room within few minutes of putting them up. I hate vacant walls myself and when we moved from our old small apartment to this house which is comparatively a lot more spacious than my old apartment I wanted to decorate it without beautiful stuffs but we all know how much it costs to get a house nowadays as things are not so simpler like it use to before.

In the old times expenses are so low and things were so cheap and reasonable everything could have been done easily. But now it is the opposite, isn’t it? Recession, job market is terrible all around the globe, the prices of things, not few but all the things are going up like crazy and income is getting limited for one and all. In these hard times we all have to plan each and every step so that we do not face any problem economically.

While we were planning to buy the house me and my spouse currently living at we had to go through all the small and big expenses, home loan schemes, financial plans, expenses related to moving and shifting out furniture and stuff in the new house and several other costs. With so many things going on we hardly had any money left to decorate the walls which I wanted so badly to do. Thanks to wall art stickers I could finally decorate the walls of my new house easily and beautifully and know how much it cost me? In short it was extremely less if you compare other methods of house decorations.

Do extensive research on vinyl wall art and wall art stickers

Vinyl wall art are quite reasonable and comes in various types and kinds from which you can choose the one you like the best, which you think will suit the décor of your house and will match your personality. I wanted to create a theme and I did it so easily with the wall art decals.

You can go with wall quotes and can put up inspirational or funny or bright and cheerful wall quotes and sayings in your walls. Right from numbers to letters, names, favorite sayings to the lyrics of your favorite song and more. If you want to take a further step and be extremely romantic and stick up wall art letters and write down the vows you both took on your wedding day – you can do it all with wall art stickers easily as it is just like sticking pictures in your scrapbook, just that in place of scrapbook you stick it on the walls of your house. You can also stick wall art decals of your favorite movie poster, favorite band and you can even customize your wall stickers making it anything you want to put on the walls on your place.

Steps to turn your kids room more fun and colorful with wall art stickers

If you are thinking of transforming the look of your child’s room then wall art stickers might be the best solution for you. Each and every child likes colorful bright rooms; children hate dull, boring rooms. With the wall decals you can change their rooms into fairy tale where your little baby girl or boy will be the hero or the princess just like what they have read or seen in the cartoon channels and fairy tale books.

To change the kid’s room or rather I will use the term redecorating it you need to chalk down a budget. Yes it is true that vinyl wall art stickers do not cost much and that the price range is quite reasonable but if you want to create a scene, for example a jungle or a whole Disney princess story concept then you must keep a budget ready. Always stick to the budget and be in limit as buying the stickers randomly without having an idea or a concept can lead to buy purchases.
