Take Care of Exterior Maintenance and Repairs

Your home's exterior is the first thing guests and neighbors see when they come to visit, so it should make a good impression. By keeping up with exterior maintenance and repairs on a regular basis, you can increase your home's curb appeal and property value and create an inviting entrance to your home.

Exterior Maintenance and Repairs

Exterior maintenance and repairs will keep your home looking its best year-round. Each year, your home's exterior is exposed to hot sun, rain storms, winds, and occasional snow, sleet and ice, so it's important to inspect your home's exterior components on a regular basis. Regular maintenance and attention to needed repairs can prevent problems and save you thousands of dollars every year on costly repairs. If you need help finding a qualified contractor for repairs, get referrals from friends and neighbors and check contractor leads in your area.

Roofing

Your roof protects the structural integrity of your home, so it's essential to make sure it's in good condition. Regular roof inspections and maintenance are essential to prevent leaks that can cause interior damage, as well as mold and mildew growth on shingles and in gutters. You should inspect your roof once in the spring and once in the fall to look for loose, curling, broken, or missing shingles. If you have a fireplace, inspect your chimney and flue at the same time to prevent smoke and fires.

Gutters

It's important to inspect and clean out your gutters and downspouts once or twice every year, preferably in the spring and fall. Gutters with broken or loose joints, or gutters that are stopped up with debris like mud, leaves and twigs can cause damage to your home's facings, siding and exterior paint. They can also cause leaks that can damage your home's attic, interior walls and foundation.

Paint and Siding

Exterior paint and siding is exposed to hot sun, rain and wind all year. Heat and sun beating down on your house can cause your siding and paint to fade, crack, splinter and blister. Rain can expose siding and paint to mold and mildew, especially if dampness doesn't dry out quickly. Both sun and rain can cause wood and vinyl siding to expand and contract which can result in increased damage from breaking and cracking.

Doors and Windows

Exterior doors and windows should be inspected and maintained on a regular basis throughout the year. Since both are exposed to outdoor elements year-round, they can be easily damaged. You should inspect your doors and windows for cracks and broken glass that cause air leaks and heat and cooling loss. For maximum energy efficiency, weatherproof your doors and windows to keep your home's interior temperatures comfortable year-round.

How to Get Rid of Pests with Natural Solutions

For people concerned about the toxins and chemicals used by professional exterminators, you might be interested in trying a few natural DIY options the next time you find yourself with an insect infestation at home. Just remember that many natural solutions are less potent than commercial pesticides, and even if they do the job, it can take longer for them to take care of the problem.

You can try these homemade ideas, or talk to professionals like Burnaby exterminator Local Pest Control. They usually have milder or non-toxic options at their disposal too.

Do a Clean Up
Many insects are drawn to food sources, such as open food packages or even just too many crumbs on the counter or floor. Though this is the best preventative step you can take, it should also be done even after the pests have arrived.

Not only should all food be packed away securely, dust up all crumbs and then give counters and floors a good washing to eliminate the smell of food. You also want to get rid of any scent trails that bugs like ants lay down to help others to follow. A scented product will help even more, rather than an unscented cleanser for this.

Diatomaceous Earth
This is a favorite for eco-friendly people looking for natural ways to kill insects. Diatomaceous earth a fine powder that is made up (on a microscopic level) of crushed shells. It feels like flour to us but it's like shards of glass to tiny bugs. The fragments get into their joints and quickly damage their exoskeletons. Without any further detail, it kills insects as they walk through it. Sprinkle a generous amount along the edges of baseboards, under cabinets or anywhere else you see the pests. It's harmless to anything larger than a bug, so don't worry about pets or kids either. As long as the DE stays dry, it will quickly start to kill off any insects that cross its path.

Borax and Sugar
This is another recipe for a natural bug-killer that uses easy-to-find ingredients. It works very well for ants and roaches specifically. You need 1/2 cup white sugar, about 1 1/2 tablespoons of borax (check the laundry section at the supermarket) and 1 1/2 cups of warm water. Just mix everything together and stir until the powders dissolve. Now you have your repellent.

Place very shallow saucers or even jar lids in places where the bugs are a problem, along with a cotton ball or two. Add enough of your solution to soak the cotton. The bugs will be attracted to the sweet sugar but will be killed off by the borax. They often take small droplets back to the colony, so they will start to die off even if they don't visit the traps directly.

Scented Repellents
Other options include a wide range of heavily-scented material that will repel insects. Sprinkling cinnamon, mint leaves, garlic powder, or coffee grounds around where the insects are congregating can be enough. Moth balls are a stronger material for this, but they aren't really very natural and might be better saved as a last resort.

If you are unable to handle your insect problem with these natural methods, you should accept defeat and try the exterminator. Letting the problem continue for too long will create a much bigger infestation to deal with.

Lack Of High-Quality Building Maintenance

I am not sure why maintenance in most buildings here in Dubai are sub-standard. They are not like the ones in the US, Canada, Europe and even those in Australia and New Zealand. I think that even the Philippines have better building maintenance compared to here.

Our building can be considered old in comparison to the number of new buildings around the neighborhood. This is only 7 years old and yet the exterior looks so dirty, the elevators keep getting stuck, the gym equipment is not even fully functional, the intercom units in each flat do not work and the tiles and paint are chipping.

I just hope they can use high quality materials to keep the whole building up-to-date. I can see the workers sometimes come and fix stuff in other units and their materials need serious updating. Perhaps try using Reid industrial supplies when they are fixing the heaters, air conditioning unit, sliding doors and windows' bearings and even the fire alarm.

We are just being practical so we cannot move to another building because the rate will be twice as much. We are not permanent dwellers of this place but these building owners should take into heart the comfort of their tenants.

What to Look for in a Plumber

Finding a good local plumber in Los Angeles is extremely  important for  the  health and function of your home. While you  can find a plumber when there is a problem with the pipes or drains in your home, it is usually  a  better idea to being  your search before there is  a problem. By finding a plumber  before  you  have a problem, you will not  be rushed into a decision because of an emergency that needs to be fixed. This  can allow you to take the time  to  research  different plumbers, getting a good idea of the service that they provide. By doing this, you  will be able to get the best  service for your needs and you  will  have someone  that you can  rely upon whenever there is a problem.  Here  is a quick  look at  what  to look for in a plumber when you are doing your search.

Professionalism

When you are looking for a plumber, it is essential that you hire someone that is professional in their conduct. The reason for this is that this person will be in your home for an extended period of time, making it important that they respect you and your property. By working with someone that has a professional manner, you are much more likely to receive a quality product and service. Professionalism is also important so that you do not run into any financial or legal problems, since some plumbers might charge you more money that the service necessarily costs. More than likely, the problem will be caused from a lack of accounting and other professional practices.

Training and Experience

When you are looking for a local plumber in Los Angeles, it is essential that you hire someone with training and experience. You will want to first make sure that the plumber is legally certified and licensed to perform their work. A person can only obtain their certification in plumbing after going through a lengthy apprenticeship, which gives them the skills and knowledge necessary to fix any problem. You will also want to make sure that your plumber is experienced in working with your particular problem.

Roof Cleaning

We live in a high-rise residential building so we are not very keen with issues on the building's roof. However, there are times when cable staff and other workers go up the roof deck to install satellite dishes and other stuff, they just live the cut wirings and other materials they used lying on the floor. I know it shouldn't be my concern but I live in the building and I would prefer if they also take care of the roof by not littering. The building owner should enlist cleaner today roof cleaning services to make the whole surrounding clean, from top to bottom.

Maintenance Woes

Three years in this flat and so many fixtures to update! Our kitchen counter is slowly getting out of alignment with the wall. The cupboards' hinges are loose. The faucets are dripping. The wall paint chips and even the door chimes do not chime!

I just changed the dripping shower head two months ago and in the other bathroom too. I asked the maintenance personnel to fix the wiring of the other room because the chandelier would not switch on even if the electrical system was working.

So far, none has been done. I may end up calling an electrician to fix the wiring at my own expense. The maintenance is bad and I hope the rents go down further so we can move out next year to a new building with better facilities and maintenance service.

Leaking, Chipping and Broken

It seems like this building is falling apart in terms of bathroom and kitchen fixtures are concerned. We moved here 3 years ago and it was a brand new building. Now, it looks like it has been around for ages! The pipes are leaking, the cabinet doors creaking and almost falling off the hinges and the floor tiles are chipping.

I think a trip to the nearest hardware is in the offing as I need to change some faucets. The building owner used a very generic and cheap faucet. I will switch to something better like Grohe.

Drip! Drop!

I cannot believe that my flat is showing signs of wear and tear already when we've only been in this place for 2 years. This was a new building when we moved in. Seeing the paints chipping, the door hinges un-hingeing and the kitchen faucet dripping drives me up the wall!

I tried calling the "watchman" (the person assigned to take all possible verbal abuse from the tenants *wink*) but I think he's off. If I wait another day without doing something to these, I might just go mad. So, I'll drive to the nearest hardware tomorrow and will ask hubby to fix the drippy faucet first.

Relocating to Arizona

Oh no. Not us...yet! Although we have plans to migrate somewhere it does not rain often and the weather is almost similar to Dubai. We are so accustomed to the weather here that a 49 degrees Celsius temperature has already been accepted by our system.

Well, Phoenix, Arizona's weather is not too different from Dubai. They also get warm and humid summers and not very cool winters. If we ever want to move to a cooler climate, then we can always drive to nearby cooler states like Utah, Colorado or California where most of our relatives are residing.

One thing we are considering before we take the big leap is the location of the new place we will call home and the amenities. Phoenix, Arizona is not that far from California so we can always visit our relatives should we finally decide on the biggest life-changing move we will embark on in the future. I hope it is not a distant future!

I have discussed the need for a backyard and probably a small pool to wade in when it gets hot. to my husband. We have to scout for a great deal on real estate and Arizona swimming pool service to maintain our swimming pool. However, we can narrow down our search to Phoenix swimming pool service if we are going to live in that city. There are plenty of pool cleaning and maintaining service in the area so I suppose it will not be a hassle to choose one that is superb in service; also upon the recommendation of friends who are already living in Phoenix. Blue Palm Pools is located in Anthem and I think this pool service and repair company will do the work!
