Technology has really brought people together in many ways imaginable that was not done in the past. Before the onset of smartphones, tablets, wifi, cellular networks and the likes, people would really make an effort to communicate to their loved ones through the conventional and time consuming ways. It's a different ball game now and I am glad to be able to experience all that.
I was a Skype user before. I liked that better than the other available messenger-like programs which proliferated the internet few years ago. However, with the advent of smartphones and other hi-tech gadgets, other more advanced, more fast and definitely more user-friendly apps sprouted for every one to use. And I am very happy to try one -
OkHello.
OkHello is an iPhone app which is a combination of Whatsapp, Skype and Facebook Chat all together. It is a compatible iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. It requires iOS 5.0 or later and is optimized for iPhone 5. The good thing about this app is that it is simple, not very cluttered in terms of design and so easy to use. I didn't have to use a manual or help to navigate the interface.
Installing the app can be done from iTunes. You can use it right away after installation. The sign in is quite easy. You're given 2 options, 1) using your Facebook account or 2) create a new account to use. I choose to use my Facebook account. Viola! It only took me less than 2 minutes to complete the process, including the input of the 4-digit code that the app will send to the number you registered.
Easy!
After all those steps, I managed to start with the chat. My daughter invited me and she created a private room for us to chat in. I also noticed that if you don't use any picture for your profile, the app assigns cute characters like in my case, a friendly and chubby ghost.
Typing and sending texts, videos and even pictures was fast. The only caveat my daughter was telling me was the fact that if your iPhone is the older kind like the first generation iPhone 3G, the video chat won't work. It's designed for the higher model types of iPhone.
One thing we found very fun to use about this app is that, you can link it to Emoji. It's another independent app most youngsters use to add funny faces and symbols in their chat message. I haven't tried it in conjunction with other independent apps for iPhone except for the Emoji to make our conversation lively, funky and totally fab!
The only suggestion I can think of to make this app more fun and engaging (not that it isn't fun as it is already!) is to make it available for use across other platforms not just the IOS. Include Android as well as there are plenty of people using this environment. The more the happier, right?
I still like the app all in all because it's very easy to use, quick processing and simple. For someone who is not as techie as myself, I prefer apps like OkHello because I don't have to struggle navigating it and using the functions.
