I'm going back to basics. I'm going back to the conventional way of doing things. That is a goal I have this year.

I want my communication to be open but I want to do it the old-fashioned way where I still have to get a pen and a paper and actually use the pen to write.  The advent of high-technology and a multitude ways to bridge the gap amongst people has really turned the world into one very convenient and yet, very lazy society.

People don't go out anymore to socialize. They don't send cards nor write. They just call, send text messages, send electronic cards or just post something on your social wall - electronically. Don't people like to receive their love notes written by someone they love? Don't they like to read cards with poems penned by their favorite friend or relative? Don't they want to wait for the personal mails that was sent from across the seas?

I miss the way my generation did things before. I actually had to ask my parents to get me new sets of pens, papers and even get my envelope printing done in a local printing store to have it personalized. And those were manual effort on our part.

The world has to slow down on being advanced. While it's not bad to advance in other fields like in Science or space exploration, it's still nice to keep the jobs of those mailman who delivers our mails and packages with gusto.

Self Improvement Through Training Opportunities

I always believe that we have to take advantage of every opportunity that comes our way because opportunity knocks only once and I don't want to miss that.

I apply that same principle in my approach to learning and development. It is something I value because I can enhance myself both personally and professionally. I know how important it is to keep learning and improving and attending trainings and seminars are just ways to do that.

My 2014 is lined up with more trainings to enhance soft skills. That is my priority this year. What are these soft skills that I aim to improve?

• Communicating skills - being able to express myself effectively and diplomatically

• Listening skills - being able to listen intensively, understand what is told and be able to show empathy

• Enhance Positive Outlook - be more optimistic in every challenging situations and issues that may come my way

• Master the art of Time Management - be able to handle my tasks and prioritize what needs to be done

• Handling Stress -  to be able to channel negative energies brought by external and internal stress into a positive energy through methods of meditation, prayers, engagement in sports and healthy lifestyle

• Ability to take in feedback and criticism constructively - be able to accept other people's feedback and criticism with an open mind and to take them as stepping stones for my own development

Yahoo's Auto Compose A Valentine Message Feature

The last time I checked before dozing off was my yahoo account for any pending assignments that I might have missed last night. So, as soon as I got up, I checked my mail right away and I saw a tiny heart pulsating each time my mouse hovers it.


I got curious because it said "Auto Compose a Valentine Message." So I thought, this should be interesting. True enough, it is interesting and cute at the same time because once you click the throbbing heart, you will be directed to a new message. There's a tab in the lower part of the screen towards the left where you can choose the type of message you like to send out.


I tried all of them (but didn't send to anyone) just to see what was written. There are 3 choices on the drop down menu:

Friendly Love



All Outta Love



They are cute, funny and witty especially the All Outta Love. They kept changing so if you change your mind about the message, just select again from the drop down menu and you'll get a different message; maybe funnier or cringe-worthy next time.

Re-connecting With Old Friends

Who said Facebook is bad? Well, not me! I can be biased too you know. I just appreciate Facebook more now that I have lessened my gaming time and focus on socializing and connecting with family and friends. And very recently, I got to reconnect to close friends I have lost contact with when I left the Philippines.

I am very glad that this social network site is running and able to connect people all over. I know others still don't like Facebook. It depends on how you use it and how you set your privacy settings. I have set mine closed for friends only so other people cannot view my profile just like that. You can be secured in Facebook too as long as you check your privacy settings regularly.

I do not glorify Facebook though. I am just glad that it can act as a channel to bridge the gap of long-lost pals and family members. It is also a great avenue to use when you need to communicate to them in one go, aside from the email of course.

I am so happy my close friends found me here again. It is so nice to relive the happy times and go forward knowing that this time, they are there to move with me. Happiness!

SimSimi

I will have a lot of serious catching up to do with communication technology. I am so behind with what's new. All I know is that, there is Blackberry, then there is Apple's iPhone and iPad. But, I don't know what's going on with the communication technology.

One testimony is the fact that I don't know what SimSimi is. I keep hearing it from friends and keep seeing treads on social network site about how fancy and cute SimSimi is. So I researched. I found out that SimSimi is an application in iPhone and other platforms using Android that you have to download. It is created in 2002 by a Korean tech company called ISMaker. It is a question-and-answer kind of application or simply put - a conversation application. SimSimi is like a smart entity with artificial intelligence responding to questions given by the users. Oftentimes, the reply comes as hilarious adding more fun and entertainment factor to the application. Here's a snapshot of a SimSimi chat (and by the way, SimSimi is so cute!).

Don't Jump Into Conclusions

Well, I have a very funny thing to tell you. My daughter is a friend of mine in Facebook. And please don't judge me for allowing her to have an account. She is a smart and sensible kid so she knows who to accept in her friends' circle in Facebook. Okay, going back to what I am supposed to tell you. I can actually view her posts in my wall and there was one she just posted few minutes ago regarding how she got home safe and that her friends left her in the school bus and she hear the teen-aged boys calling her name and saying malicious things. I don't know the whole story but I left some comments in her message trail and asking her friends as well to tell me if the boys don't stop teasing my daughter. And then I paused and thought for a while? Was I over-reacting? Did I even bother asking my daughter the full account of the story behind the message? Or was my daughter just sending out coded messages to her friends? Whatever her reasons are, I decided to ask her.

In all honesty, I am not really someone who jumps into conclusion or quick to judge like some people I know. So, I asked my daughter if someone was harassing her in the school bus. She said none so I asked why she wrote something like that on her wall post. Then she started laughing. She told me she was just listening to the teen boys' conversations and she as shocked that she had to share it to her friends. GASP!!!

Upon hearing that, I almost wished the ground I was standing on would open up and swallow me alive! I was getting ready to go "fight-mode" and then good thing I asked her. 

So, lesson learned - never, ever jump into conclusion. Or better yet, never, ever meddle with your kid's affairs. I am so mortified.

We need a Boost

I am not sure if the reception problems we encounter in the use if our cell phones are due to the phone models, location we are in or the service provider. Nevertheless, we never experienced poor reception when we were in our old flat in Al Muteena.

I don't know if we need a cell phone booster to enhance our reception. Sometimes it is getting very frustrating for all of us because we have no land line and rely solely on our cell phones. Most of the times we get a lot of choppy calls or sometimes it becomes a bit static.

Modern Day Dating

I reminisce the time when I used to date (of course, I was still not married to my husband then) and get pampered silly. I didn't have too many admirers like how my sister had tons and tons of them. However, my suitors were the persistent kind. They would never take "no" for an answer. Much as I rue the fact that I had to meet them for a casual date, I must admit, I still had fun. Fun in a sense that I got to know the person more and realized that there were so much more beneath that "rough" exterior.

Dating was more of an obligation I had to meet then. I didn't find myself that interesting to be pursued. So, I preferred going out with my friends and just chilling at Greenhills or malling. My mom would often tease me for having to lock myself most of the time in my room, head under my favorite books - text books, while the rest of teens my age would party and date like crazy. I know, boring. I get so conscious when I go on one-on-one dates because I felt dorky. You see, I was never given the gift of gab. Talking to someone and trying to hold the conversation for long was such a feat.

Nowadays, dating has taken a different turn. People sometimes don't meet in person. They do it online via the Internet through the visual aid of the web cam. I wonder if the girls these days get flowers and box of chocolates from their suitors. Hmmmm?

Voice Over Internet Protocol

I am so confused with the new terminologies people are using in the communication and Internet industry these days. I feel like I am still in the Medieval period where the mode of communication is thru sending knights bearing letters to the other kingdom, village or towns.

Time has changed. Communication has taken a big leap in terms of technology and process. Gone are the days of telegrams and carrier pigeons. We are now living in the 21st century where most things are done with the aid of machines and modern technology.

The reason I brought this topic up is that not all people are well-versed in the modes of communication the corporate world or business sector employ. I have just learned recently that there are many ways to communicate using the Internet apart from the normal like sending emails, chatting, prints/publications and various kinds of media. I learned that we can also relay voice communication thru Internet; hence the term, VoIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol. In layman's term, it is a term used to refer to the category of transmission process of voice communication.

I am more enlightened now about its meaning. So if I see advertisements on used VOIP phones at wholesale prices in the web or read ads on that or if I hear the term VoIP, I'll have a smile on my face and think, "Oh I know what that means!"
