Cool Breeze Ahead

The weather is starting to become bearable now that autumn is officially on. It's a good thing to be able to stand outside and not get drenched in your own sweat even for just a minute. The breeze is inviting. It's cool and such a respite from the long, withering, summer months of the Middle East.

I am looking forward to a nice fall season this time and hopefully, winter will be ok (not that it snows here). I just miss the cold season and my winter outfits!

What To Wear In Extreme Cold Weather

Areas in America and Canada seems to be literally freezing due to the natural phenomenon called "polar vortex." It is a strong area of low pressure that wanders around the Arctic during winter time. However, its movement had an aberration and slipped farther South, affecting areas in the USA.

Few minutes longer in the frigid weather can cause frostbite as temperature dip as low as 5 F and that is very dangerous. So, what can you wear to keep the heat in your body during this harsh winter condition? Here are some clothing that will help you insulate and stay warm.

Thermal layers
Ensure that the first layer which is closest to your body fits a bit tight to trap the warm air inside but not too loose so that it can remove perspiration. A synthetic material stays dry and warm but can trap odor while woolen material can be itchy but keep you warm. Pick the right material that you are comfortable with as long as you are warm.

The second layer can be a vest, sweater or puff vest with down. These are all warm materials that will certainly keep you dry and warm.

Also wear leggings underneath your pants for added warmth and protection from the bitter cold.

Insulated parka
Top off your layers with an insulated and also waterproof parka.  Ordinary down jackets can keep you warm but can't repel wind and moisture.


Snow pants
It is best to over your lower body from the harsh winter cold by wearing snow pants on top of your regular pants. The polar vortex is an unforgiving phenomenon. No matter how many leggings you have underneath your regular pants, you can still get very cold.

Wear head gear, ear muffs, woolen socks, thick gloves and scarves
You can lose so much heat from your head to keep it covered with woolen beanie hat. Make sure that your neck, feet, hand and ears are covered as well.

Use snow boots or insulated boots
It is very important to keep moisture away from your feet. Wear woolen socks in layers but make sure you can still move your toes inside for circulation.


It pays to be warm during this extreme weather condition and proper clothing for the bitter cold will keep you safe and warm.

Hello Sunny Dubai

I thought I will never say this but after our 10-days stay in the very cold and still very wintery weather in New York, made me miss Dubai badly. And to top it off, I was raring to go home during the last few days in Buffalo.

The weather there is extremely cold for me and I am one who loves cold weather but not the wintery one. My friend from Canada who drove all the way to Buffalo to see us even said it was mild. I can just imagine what "extreme" is like. I can feel the cold in my bones. My back was getting very stiff and my layers of thermal clothing are not really helping.

So, we're back in Dubai and I could not be more relieved. I am happy to be able to experience the cold weather in the beautiful state of New York which will always be one of my favorite places to visit. I am just not sure if I can stay longer during winter.

Foggy And Cold Friday In Dubai

I'm not sure what's going in with the weather in Dubai but it has been foggy for the past 4 days. Few weeks ago, I posted about how hot it was during this year's winter. Well, I think winter came very late in our region.

I woke up in the morning to see thick fog covering our area. The temperature is 13 degrees Celcius at the moment. No wonder I am feeling a bit chilly because I left the window slightly ajar. I have taken some snaps from the veranda and the last shot was to include the sun but the fog is so think. I feel sorry for the delayed and diverted flights now because the have to land somewhere else and wait it out.

This is what I see in the morning from our 6th floor balcony at 8:50.






Drive safely everyone and buckle and bundle up. It's quite cold outside.

Cold Weather Gear

We have trip in the offing by the end of this month, just in time for the long Eid holidays. And guess where we are going again? New York! Yes, it is our all time favorite place to go to during holidays just because everything is accessible and we have family and friends there. It's just so much fun to visit a place when you know people who live there.

The weather there now is getting cooler. We have to keep our warm clothing ready. I may have to buy new winter clothing just like the north face womens jackets I saw in the internet. My winter clothes are getting very outdated and I feel it is time to update them too.

I hope to find great offers there so I can buy some nice winter clothes for myself and family. Who knows, the new winter gears may come in very handy when we push through our Europe tour next year.

Cold Weather Is Over

The cold season here in the Middle East is getting shorter each year. The cold weather did not stay long this time unlike the previous years. So, our winter clothes are barely worn now unlike before where we get to enjoy longer period of cold spells.

The weird thing about this whole seasonal changes is that you really cannot tell how cold it is going to be despite of the forecast. I checked the weather forecast here in the UAE for the next 10 days and it still shows low temperature of 13 degrees Celcius but it does not feel like it is. It feels more of 20 and above.

So with the short cold season, it is advisable and practical to not purchase heavy winter clothing and other cold season accessories like thermal socks, heater, beanie hats and gloves and electric mattress pad to warm your bed. You will not enjoy using all of them because the cold season is not that cold.

Weather Dips in Dubai

Forecast for today is cloudy with temperature going as low as 13 degrees Celcius. This winter is not as cold as the previous winters in Dubai many years ago. I remember experiencing non-stop rains and hail storms. This year's winter is like the weather in New York on a mid-day fall season.

The sky has an overcast and I thought it would rain because of the gray clouds. It might rain this week and if that happens, it will be colder.

The wind is quite cold and bites. We all slept with our thermal pjs and socks with thick comforters to keep us warm. I know I said it's not as cold as the previous winters but the temperature at night takes a dip. We have to close the windows to keep the cold out.

The extended forecast until next week is still the same, max 18 degrees Celcius and a low of 12/13.

I love this weather - not very cold and not warm. I hope it's like this all year round.

Camping During Winter

Winter in the U.A.E is rather pleasant compared to the other countries in the northern hemisphere. The temperature does not dip so low and the breeze is cool. However, the temperature can be a bit harsh in the desert area or near the mountain. Inspite of the slight change in temperature, it is still generally acceptable to go camping during winter.

Most of my friends do this annually because the winter is so short so everyone is taking advantage of the season. I have not tried camping yet because I catch colds and flu so easy. I just get so scared exposing myself to the elements even if I love the cold season.

Some of them are already planning a trip near the mountains to camp. The campers have their own instruments and even fancy Big Agnes King Solomon tents to use. My husband and I bought a small sleeping bag but I still don't have to courage to commit in the camp.

I am not sure if I will be up to the challenge even if the activity sounds interesting. I am still thinking about the idea. I am cool for a long drive or an overnight in a hotel near the mountains but sleeping outside is something I am still mulling.

Cold Weather Ahead

Winter is the best time of the year here in the UAE. The winter here is not as cold and cruel as the ones across the Atlantic. we don't get snow here but sometimes we do experience hale when the weather is going to be unforgiving. So, living in this hot and humid land, it is a welcome respite for few months to have the cold weather ahead.

The wind is blowing really nice with a slight bite on the skin because of the cold season. I find my nose drying up once in a while when I go out for my early jog. It is becoming nearly impossible to run outside without any warm jacket. So, I have to ready all my winter jackets because the cold season has come and I am loving it!

Summer Is Coming

I am really not so happy with the weather the past year and now. We did not feel the winter at all! It was cold very briefly but not very chilly to the point that we had to wear our winter clothing. It was just okay. It was not like that few years ago. Before it used to rain so hard that the streets get flooded. Sometimes there were even hailstorm for a day or two to signify the onset of a very cold season. Not this season.

It was already very hot this morning. I had to turn the air conditioning unit on. The same case is happening at home. Last 2009, we did not switch the a/c unit on until early May because it was still cold.

I told my husband that the climate is taking a different turn this time. We may have to check out humidifiers soon. I think summer will come very soon. We may not even experience spring because we barely felt winter. I hope that is not the case. It can be very, very hot in this country.

Weather Changes Here

It was quite humid the other day and how I wished I have a home dehumidifier to balance the air flow at home.

I cannot believe how this can happen when it should be winter season here. I barely feel the winter at all. I'm still using the aircondition unit because I cannot stand the humidity. It is not so breezy and cold considering the time and season.

Today, it rained for a short period of time. It was enough to bring the humidity to an acceptable level. It was a bit cold in the afternoon when I left the office. I wonder how long this coolness will hold up.

Welcoming Autumn and the Onset of Winter

Well, it cannot be denied anymore. Fall has come! The weather is great. I woke up at 6:15 a.m. and the sun was up but not as bright as the summer sunrise. I quickly did the bath routine and ent to church with my good pal.

The air was crisp as it blew cool draft on my face. The sun was a little harsh around 8:00 a.m. after the mass. Good thing, I have checked some hydroxatone reviews previously so I applied moisturizer with hydroxatone and SPF to keep my skin nourished and not susceptible to the weather changes. The season change can do so much harm on one's skin so at least I am prepared on that. Clothing wise, I am eager to take out from the winter box all my warm clothing. I just love dressing up in layers.

I really love the onset of winter. The weather brings out the best of my skin tone and condition. Not only that, I love seeing autumn flowers in full bloom. Although the trees here do not change their color much as the trees in the Northern Hemisphere. I still love cool weather just the same.

Waiting for the Winter

Summer seems to be short this year. It was not the same case because same month last year, it was very hot and humid. This morning, when I drove my hubby to the airport, it was a bit breezy and slightly cool which was not normal.

I wonder if the weather is really changing because of global warming or mother earth is just going through a cycle. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the winter and hope it will be pleasant unlike last year when I didn't even wear any winter clothing. We didn't even take out the electric blanket and thick comforters to warm us. I didn't get to wear my thermal socks at all! Not that the winter is very cold here, it is just that the air from night time to the early morning has that cold, crispy feel and you can actually get the shivers. Besides, we do not have any fireplace to warm our place.

Snow in Dubai

I admit, I want to feel how it is to live in a snowy place, let alone, a cold one. The coldest it can get here in Dubai is about 13 or 15 degrees Celsius and that is if we are lucky. Winter here is very short so we cannot sport those nice wintry clothes and enjoy winter activities like skiing, making snowmen, sticking our tongues out to taste the snow, making snow angels and enjoying hot cocoa by the fireplace.

One activity I would like to experience is going out on snowboards. Dubai has an indoor ski resort called Ski Dubai. They offer ski lessons and snowboarding. I am not sure though if the snowboarding lessons are akin to Olympic snowboarding. Nevertheless, these exciting snow activities are available here to be learned and experienced for a fee.

Ski Dubai is an indoor ski dome located in Mall of the Emirates. I have not enrolled in their snowboarding lessons but I am quite interested. I have just checked out their activities for the summer and looked at various snowboard trick images posted there and in their website.

I am thankful that even if Dubai is situated in the Middle East where vast deserts abound, it still offers activities other people from the colder regions enjoy like skiing and snowboarding. Dubai has actually brought those winter fun right in the desert for the locals and expatriates to enjoy without having to go out of the country and spend hard-earned money.

I hope to enjoy these cold activities one of these days. I am still mustering enough courage to wear those winter gear and get that snowboard and plunge. It must be exciting!

Cozy Shoes

Having a wide and flat feet is quite troublesome for me. I love to walk around on flat shoes but cannot last for few hours because my feet ache so bad. I tried using ballet shoes and they ached more. I tried using the ubiquitous gel shoes and somehow they worked. However, it will not be possible for me to wear those comfortable gel shoes due to the cold weather condition. I will definitely not only have sore feet; I will probably even have cold feet! That is not good for my flat feet. Neither do I want to have frostbite! I am sure that will certainly hurt my feet.

I have several boots, high-heeled and flat ones, to complement the seasonal changes here in Dubai. My boots are not meant for snow though if I decide to go to a snowy place. So, I checked around and found this rather cozy-looking shoes called ugg. My nieces in the US have several pairs of them and showed me how comfortable they were and suggested I too should get a pair. Actually, not just a pair but several that will go with my lifestyle and the kind of weather here in the Middle East. The shoes may look big but they are warm, comfortable, soft and even light to wear.

I will probably check out the ugg boots in the US on our next visit soon. I hope to be able to strike a good deal on the ugg boots sale in the stores and buy a pair for my daughter as well.

Oh Christmas Tree

The Christmas air is here, silently announcing the arrival of the holiday season. It is time to put up the Christmas decors and everything related to the Yuletide season.

Winter season here is rather short. One would even barely notice its passing if not for the cold breeze on your face and the longer nights. Last week, we put up our artificial Christmas tree. It is the only one we can have since we live in a very hot and humid region in this part of the globe. It is for that reason that we cannot put up real christmas trees much as our hearts desire it. The trees must be able to survive the climate here in the Middle East so they can carry on until New Year's.

I am really fascinated with live christmas trees. I enjoy seeing Christmas photos sent by our families and friends in the US specially when they are next to their real Christmas trees. I imagine the fresh scent of these trees filling their abode. It must be wonderful!

I am so tempted to get a real one this time and check out the christmas tree delivery service if I have the tree shipped here in the Middle East. I have yet to try it though and see if the live tree will withstand the humid conditions of this country.

Oh well, it is not bad to dream of having a real Christmas tree this time. We may not have a real one now but who knows. Maybe in few years time, we will be celebrating our white Christmas in the US with our very own real Christmas tree.
