How to Prepare if You Are Asked to Speak at a Funeral Service

Being asked to speak at the funeral service of a loved one can certainly be an honour, but it can also be quite daunting. You may be very nervous about what you should say, what the right things to say really are, and how you can write something that will truly showcase the best aspects of the person who has passed away. Continue reading for a few helpful tips that will assist you in preparing for giving a speech at a funeral service.

Reflect on What You Want to Say

In the same way that your loved one’s family is busy planning a funeral that will suit the deceased’s wishes, you should think about writing a speech that the person would’ve loved to hear. This requires some time to reflect, so before you start writing anything down, it’s a good idea to just take a break and reflect upon what you’d want to say. You can go for a walk to think things over, or even ask the deceased’s family about any specific funeral plans that were made in advance in order to gain some extra insight into who they really were and what they really wanted as their send off.

Consider a Theme for the Speech

When it comes to funeral speeches, there are a few themes that you can choose from. By following a theme, you can begin to generate ideas more easily. For example, you can go with a life history, or a short summary of the deceased’s life. This type of speech should reveal something about the deceased that many people in attendance may not have known about them. Or you can instead stick with a tribute speech that will showcase some of the deceased’s best achievements and the highlights of their life. And yet another option could be a shared memories theme during which you share your own insights into the life of the person who passed, and the memories that you created together.

Keep It Short

Rest assured that your eulogy doesn’t have to be long at all. In fact, funeral speeches are best when they’re kept short. You can practice saying your speech aloud and time yourself so you can be certain that it runs only about 3 to 4 minutes in length. Oftentimes, less is more, and just a few minutes should be all that you need to say what you need to say to honour the deceased in a positive and impactful way.

Feel Free to Write It Down

You certainly don’t need to memorise the speech and present it to your audience. Instead, feel free to write it down and read it. Glance up at your audience every now and then in order to make a connection with them and establish eye contact with them, but don’t feel obligated to have lines memorised.

Writing and presenting a speech at a funeral service can be a great way to honour a loved one who has passed. If you end up feeling overwhelmed at the event, however, you can ask a family member or friend to read the speech for you.

Getting Children to Look After Their Clothes

Fact: children are hard-wearing on clothes. Whether it’s a new pair of shoes that come home after one day’s wear scuffed and battered, the snowy-white socks turned green with grass stains or the discovery of the school blazer, wrinkled up in the corner after you’ve so carefully pressed it with the steam iron can be disheartening. But if your little ones aren’t aware of how much work it takes to keep them neat and tidy, it’s worth teaching them to look after themselves, cutting down on your work and giving them a life skill in the process. So how do you instil a sense of responsibility for their clothes?

Create the right environment

Your kids will be more likely to put their clothes away if they have a set place for every item. Plastic under bed storage is a great way of stowing away shoes. Make sure they have a wardrobe they can reach, with plenty of hangers and space for everything. Buy a large, easy to use laundry basket. Show them how to separate colours for the washing machine. This doesn’t have to be a chore, your child will find learning to take care of themselves more fun than you would think.

Establish a routine

Designate Sunday evening as the time to prepare for the week ahead at school. Stress to your child that it is their responsibility to look after their things, not yours. And don’t forget to ask them if they’re happy they have everything they need for the week ahead. Children will feel good about themselves if they feel they have participated in their own organisation for the week. Encourage them to lay out their school uniform the night before, polish their shoes and make sure there are no creases or stains. Making a game of uniform inspection with younger children will make it more fun, and having everything laid out will take the stress out of Monday mornings for both parent and child.

Teach them how it’s done

It’s an easy and common excuse for kids that don’t want to do housework that they don’t know how it’s done, so make sure you show them. Introduce the kids to little tips and tricks that will help them stay neat throughout the course of the day, such as using a lint roller to keep dark fabrics neat, or throwing a t-shirt in the dryer for five minutes to smooth out any wrinkles.

Just remember to be encouraging, consistent, and don’t lose your patience with mistakes. Having pride in a neat appearance is a crucial life skill, and instilling this in your children from an early age will serve them well later in life.

Review - Relish Menu Planning

Planning a meal for my family is such a feat for me because I am not so keen at cooking simply because, I don't cook. However, I should be thankful for sites like relishrelish.com for giving me inspiration on what to prepare and buy for my family's weekly meals for 5 days.

Relishrelish.com is a great resource and planning site for mommies like myself. It makes planning meals a breeze because of its functions like:

Build a menu
This is a feature of the site where you can choose from a number of meal selections and drag your selections and even favorite them on the other side of the dashboard.

 photo relish1.png

Shopping List
Your chosen meals have a built in ingredients feature so that when you click on the shopping list, all the ingredients in the meals you have selected for the week will be shown to you. All you have to do is check on the items you have to buy. You can also select the number of people to be served so the number of ingredients adjusts accordingly so you don't have to make wild guesses on how much ingredients you have to buy for the number of people you will serve. The number of people to serve can be adjusted to 2, 4, 6 and 8. You can print this list as well that you can take in the grocery.

Legend Key
This shows the legends used in the recipes. I find this very helpful because I am not kitchen-savvy nor cooking-savvy so anything that involves cooking terminologies will be clarified with this legend. The legend also seves as your guide if you want to prepare vegetarian meals, good for morning preparations, budget meals, desserts, etc. It is a good way to check the categories of your meal plan.

Favorites tab
This tab will hold the list of your favorite dishes. Just click this tab to view them in one go.

Weekly Recipes tab
This tab features all the recipes in relishrelish.com where you can choose the ones you want to prepare for the whole 5 days.

Editor's Pick tab
This is a great tab to see what is smokin' in the editor's choices. You may want to favorite the choice or add to your meal plan too!

Benefits:
This site really saves you time, effort and money in the long run because the meal planning makes it easy for you to get the stuff you want and print it. It auto adjusts the amount of ingredients you require based on the number of people you will serve form the shopping list function. So, you don't spend much on unnecessary number of ingredients and put them to waste because you bought too much.

Subscription:
For $7.00 per month, I think that is a good deal to be able to have everything you need with meal planning. You can start with a the $7.00 per month or save 15% if you subscribe for 6 months and a 30% discount if you choose the yearly subscription which is a total of $58.80.

Fun Crafts And Hobbies To Enjoy With Your Children

With the winter days drawing in, and weekends you enjoyed as a family outdoors a distant memory, now is the time to start thinking about ways you can occupy and entertain your kids during the school holidays, rainy days and at the weekends.

Most preschoolers and older children like and enjoy arts and crafts, and with the festive season nearly upon us, it is the perfect time to get your gluesticks, paint pots and pom poms ready for some crafty fun!

Crafting is extremely beneficial for children; it stimulates their senses, enhances their language and social skills, and is also great for building relationships with your children.

Here are some fun and creative ideas that you and your kids will enjoy, and who knows some of these activities may reveal a budding Picasso or a Delia Smith in your family!

Baking
This is perhaps one of the most popular hobbies you can enjoy with your kids.  Not only are you teaching them vital cooking skills for when they have flown the nest in years to come, you are also giving them some knowledge about maths when measuring out ingredients.  Take your little ones to the local supermarket and you will find various mixes, ranging from cookie dough mixtures to chocolate brownies and if you want to make the good old fairy cakes, you will find lots of icing mixtures already prepared, as well as plenty of decorations to adorn your masterpieces with.

Hand/feet printing
This is an age old activity and you probably remember doing this yourself when you were younger, however hand and feet printing is still really popular with children.  Wriggling their little toes and hands in paint allows them to explore their senses of touch and sight and the freedom of getting a little bit messy makes the activity lots of fun.  They also serve as wonderful keepsakes for you to proudly display in frames or on canvasses.  As we all know with little ones, accidents can happen, so if you are worried about your kids staining your recently painted walls or damaging your carpets, you can get some great water based paints which are non toxic and clean off easily.

Card making
Card making is a great way to recycle everyday objects in your home such as buttons, ribbons, cotton wool and even bottle lids.  This activity is great for educating your children about the importance of recycling and also allows them to use their own initiative and ideas for finding ways they can use certain household items to create different types of cards.  For example, cotton wool for Santa’s beard or black pipe cleaners to create a spider for a spooky Halloween card.

Make animal balloons
Your kids will look at you in wonderment and amusement when you unveil an animal balloon after several actions of twisting and bending.  There are several websites and videos you can find online that will teach you how to make a simple dog or a monkey out of a balloon or you can make them freestyle.  Get your kids involved and ask them to help you by inflating the balloons or ask them to make an animal while you guess what it is. There will be guaranteed hours of fun and lots of giggles for sure.

Hopefully this has helped to inspire you, for when you are stuck for ideas on a rainy day and the kids are a bit restless.  Just remember, your children will value any kind of time spent with you, so if you can, make your time together as precious as possible.

I Dreamt Of My Father-In-Law

I don't know why I get vivid dreams of people who are close to me and it pains me that I don't know if I should give meaning to the dream or to just brush it off. I always dream of people either they are in a coffin or I am mourning for them or they are in the hospital and recuperating.

My dream about my father-in-law just took place in the morning before I woke up. It was so clear, so colored and yet very confusing to me. The dream has parallel connections to reality because my father-in-law is already being supported by a full face respirator which is helping him to breathe properly. He already had a cardiac arrest last Thursday after being in coma for the past few weeks.

I know he is not well. The doctors already informed the family back home but in my dream, he got better. He woke up from his coma, I was standing there and he even asked where he was and why was he there. And then I woke up.

I called my husband who flew to Manila last Thursday who was there in the hospital with my mom-in-law and just making sure that my father-in-law is not alone. I spoke to my husband and told him about the dream. I asked to speak to my mom-in-law and also told her about the dream. My mom-in-law said that my father-in-law might be saying goodbye in my dream. The doctors already informed them that the machine is the only thing that is prolonging his life. So, I asked her if she can put the phone next to my father-in-law's ear just so I can thank him for all the good things that he has done for his family and us. I told him that we love him.

My mother-in-law said that my father-in-law had tears in his eyes. And it only meant that he heard me. I still have the burning hope in me that he will come out of this. I am praying for that miracle to happen if the Lord will allow it.

All of these reminds me of the pain and anguish I had felt when my dad passed away few years ago. I didn't get to say goodbye. But I am hoping for a miracle. I hope the dream signifies hope or a miracle.

Happy Father's Day 2013

It's not every day that I get to tell my hubby how much I appreciate everything that he has done for us. And it's not every day that I show him how I value those little things he has done for our family, even to my own family.

It's just fitting to give him this recognition for being the best dad, hubby and best bud a girl like me can ever have.

Happy Father's Day to you honey! Thank you for everything you have done and is still doing to give us the kind of life we deserve, the security, the comfort and most importantly, for the love.

And to all the great fathers out there who selflessly sacrifice their comfort over their family, their lives for the life of their own and for giving so much and getting so little in return, we all salute you for being the Fathers we all deserve.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

M. O. M.

Moms are not just mothers who follow their kids around like a dog wagging its tail waiting for a treat. Moms are not just wives who serve their husbands and make sure that everything is in order in the house, the meals are cooked and the kids have been fed. Moms are not just career moms as well who juggle work and family to ensure that both worlds are taken cared of. Moms are definitely not just caregivers, nannies, house help, cook, first aider, driver and all the other tasks that we moms can do.

I'm beginning to think that moms are like super heroines. We can do so much more with the time in our hands without complaints.  We just do it. No questions asked. And most times, we are the most unappreciated, underpaid and definitely unrecognized in the lot.

You know what, your lives won't be as easy as it is now without us - great moms! I am redefining the meaning of MOM now. Mom is no longer the term of endearment our family calls us. It's no longer the term used to indicate we are mothers. Mom is...

M - mom

O - over

M- matter

Yes, we are moms over matter. We can defy anything. We can do almost everything. Multi-task, take care of the bills, walk the dogs, feed the kids, wash the clothes, press them too, prepare meals for the family, run errands, drive, put on make up, work, get pregnant, give birth, have periods, have very painful periods, go through menopause and so much more. We are M.O.M.s!

We deserve this Mother's Day!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL GREAT MOMS OUT THERE!

Leaving The Past And Moving Forward

Life was not difficult for me and my family while I was growing up. We had most of what good life offered. We had nannies who followed us around. We ate good food. We always had gifts under the Christmas tree and my parents were always available as hosts to events in the village or town or as sponsors to some sports team.  We enjoyed the privilege of going to private schools and universities. We wore fine and branded clothing and stuff. We frequent the malls every week. Our lifestyle was lavish and I would be a hypocrite if I said I didn't enjoy that kind of life. We thought it would last. We were wrong.

Ever since my father passed away, all that we thought would last faded away. The riches? Gone. The lavish lifestyle is no longer existent. It hurts but our lives turned upside down. We were facing life in a different angle and it wasn't very pretty to see it in a different colored spectacle. We had seen life as rosy but the view from where we are now is bleak.

To this day, I have learned to swim against the current of my life's troubled past. Most times, I feel the invisible hand pulling me downwards but I always find myself fighting back. It is hard but my resolve is to be able to stand up again and regain the legacy that my father had built for us, even for just a mere fraction of what he had established for his children.

That is why I am looking forward to 2013 because I know that this year will be a better year for my family. All the struggles we have been through for many years since my dad died will be a thing of the past because it is our moment to shine. There are still obstacles along the way but I feel we will be victorious because we are one in this effort. We are all leaving the past and moving forward because that is what my father would love to see. And God the Father will only want the best for His children.

Christmas Leave Is Almost Over

Time flies when you're having fun! Nine days have passed out of the thirteen days leave we have and I am beginning to feel a bit sad.

I can't believe that our vacation will soon end and we will have to fly back to home base. Although I am excited to be home again because I miss my youngest four-legged daughter Millie, my heart aches to leave my mom, relatives, in-laws and friends here. It will take time again before I can visit.

I'm just glad that I got to see my mom again and my family in Bulacan and also my friends and relatives. There's nothing more heart-warming than seeing the smiles and feeling the love of the people who truly matter.

Christmas Shopping Budget

I don't like cramming and most especially, I don't like crowded malls. So, if you're like me, you'll understand why it is always better to shop way in advance like I do.

I start my Christmas budget as early as June. And I do my shopping early too.  Six months of allocated budget for the festive season works well for me because I have a big, extended family. I keep around 50-100$ a month for the occasion or if there's an emergency. Otherwise, it's intended to be shared come Christmas.

Our lists of family, friends, godparents and godchildren to give gifts to are quite long. I am sure it will make a dent in the savings but hey, Christmas is the time to share. And when we have extra to give around, we're happy to buy gifts to the people we love. This Christmas, we have already spent over the intended budget because we're coming home for the holidays. We don't see our family every occasion so we want to give them the best.

How about you? Do you have a Christmas budget? Do you stick to that?

Christmas Vacation - Coming Soon!

Few more days and we will be spending the most joyous occasion with our families and friends back home. We have been very busy catching up on our Christmas shopping for families and friends so my schedule is out of whack these days.

Christmas shopping is not only the activity I have during weekends. I also have to fulfill blog assignments, do some household chores and finish my sister-in-laws handmade baptismal invitation for her youngest son. I commissioned to do it as my gift to her. It's a good way to get the creative juice back and I am glad that it's trickling in. Although it came a bit late, the creativity juice that is. I would have created some handmade cards to giveaway. No fret, I'll start early next year with that project.

All I know is, we're counting the days and the excitement is building up. I can't wait to see my family and friends once again.

Advance Merry Christmas to all! I'll be very busy these coming days so let me greet you now.

May the blessed season bring joy, peace and love in your hearts. Happy 2013!

This Blogger Is On Blog Leave

Every blogger needs a break from the blog scene and I am taking my blog leave from October 25 to 31, 2012!

Last time I went on a blog leave was last July and even then, it was a short break too just like now but it was something my mind begged so I could recharge and enjoy my time with my daughter. This time it's the whole family.

We are visting some relatives again in New York and we just love that place! The weather is cool and inviting, there are lots of goodies on sale and the autumn foliage is starting to show its wonderful hues. Besides those wonderful stuff, I kind of miss Shake Shack and Century 21!

So, if I will comment and visit your blogs on Nov.

Giving Thanks Today

It's so nice to wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and relaxed after a long and taxing work week. And what's so great about this morning is that I thank God for another day, for the beautiful weather, for the family beside me, for a quirky little pooch sleeping on the foot of the bed, for the cozy bed, for the home, for the food on the table, for the warm clothing and there are just too many to be thankful for.

I don't have to wait for Thanksgiving to appreciate everything around me for today is another day and I shall live it to the fullest!

Happy Friday everyone! Be thankful for your blessings!

Weekend Activities and Good Weather

The weather is quite inviting these past few days. I think it signifies the coming of the cooler months. We are all enjoying the breezy weekend and the whole family has so many stuff to do. My daughter has her activities with friends, hubby with his guests and I with my blogging and business opp.

Our weekend has never been this manic before. We used to just stay home because the weather is uncooperative. However, October spells more activities for all of us and probably the coming months.

I do hope I will find the energy to do all that we have lined up for the month (not to mention a travel in the offing...hehehe)!

Creative Christmas Gifts

My creative juice is not yet back but I am really trying hard to get the groove back in my arts and craft projects especially now that it is the "ber" month. That means, Christmas is just around the corner. That means too, I have to start making my Christmas list as we are spending the holidays back home.

I want to be creative this time with my gifts. Last time we bought things that are a necessity to the recipient. I am thinking of making accessories like necklaces and bracelets to my female relatives and friends. I can check bead suppliers here in Dubai for some nice, chic and funky beads and I can probably start working on the project.

If the accessories does not materialize, I am still thinking of getting personalized items to my family and friends. It will be an interesting Christmas gift list this year. I wonder if I can finish all that I plan to do before we go home.

Re-connecting With Old Friends

Who said Facebook is bad? Well, not me! I can be biased too you know. I just appreciate Facebook more now that I have lessened my gaming time and focus on socializing and connecting with family and friends. And very recently, I got to reconnect to close friends I have lost contact with when I left the Philippines.

I am very glad that this social network site is running and able to connect people all over. I know others still don't like Facebook. It depends on how you use it and how you set your privacy settings. I have set mine closed for friends only so other people cannot view my profile just like that. You can be secured in Facebook too as long as you check your privacy settings regularly.

I do not glorify Facebook though. I am just glad that it can act as a channel to bridge the gap of long-lost pals and family members. It is also a great avenue to use when you need to communicate to them in one go, aside from the email of course.

I am so happy my close friends found me here again. It is so nice to relive the happy times and go forward knowing that this time, they are there to move with me. Happiness!
